Fishing Reports

Summer 2007

September 19, 2007 -  I am happy to announce that my 23' Jones Brothers will now be departing from Taylor's Landing on Little Creek near the Norfolk/ VA Beach border.  This new location will make for quick access to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.  The 19' Pathfinder will remain on the Middle Peninsula.  As far as current fishing conditions, this cool shot of air is dropping the water temperatures which will make the fish more active as they bulk up for fall.  The comfortable climate and good fishing that we have this time of year makes for a great day on the water!

September 9, 2007 -  I made the trip up to Paxfest in Solomons, MD yesterday.  It was great to wet a line and shoot the breeze with the crew.  Over the last week we've had some fun backcountry fishing on the Middle Peninsula and light line fishing at the HRBT.

August 30, 2007 -  It sure was a hot August - so much so that I decided to chop off my mop head of hair and go for the cue ball look!  Between the heat and a week long class to upgrade my captain's license, I haven't been on the water too much over the last few weeks.  That will change shortly though with the best fishing of the year just around the corner.  Rockfish, puppy drum, and speckled trout should put on quite a show in the shallows of the Middle Peninsula from now until mid-November.  The lights of the HRBT will have stripers lined up by the hundred at night.  As the fish school up in the open water, we will find acres of blitzing stripers around the CBBT.  The best shot at that trophy sized striped bass will be from Thanksgiving to late January.  Book early so you don't miss out on the fabulous fall and winter fishery!

August 8, 2007 -  Yesterday was my first charter since I returned from Costa Rica.  We ran offshore in search of cobia and were rewarded with a 46" fish on a 15# class baitcasting outfit.  Another cobia refused to be duped into eating a fly, but readily inhaled our squid teaser rig.  Black tip and sharpnose sharks kept things interesting.  On our way in we stopped by the CBBT to try our hand at black drum.  We found a school of 40-60 pound fish but none were interested in our offerings.

July 27, 2007 -  I will be out of the country until August 4th.  Please leave me an e-mail or phone message if you need to get in touch and I will contact you on my return.  In the mean time, I'll leave you with a few more pictures of some shallow water fish from this week.  Highlights were catching very healthy stripers to 32", pretty specks to 22" and watching a 36" striper try to destroy a 9" white perch that a client was winding in!

July 25, 2007 -  The weather this past week has been fantastic with low humidity and temperatures.  The cooler weather has really turned on the fishing with some awesome shallow water action on the Middle Peninsula.  With good high tides in the mornings all the species are on the feed - stripers, specks, pups, croaker and flounder.  We had a couple real nice fish break us off and saw about a 32" striper follow a hooked fish up to the boat... there are some quality fish to be had!  My wife and I are headed down to Costa Rica on Sunday for a few days to celebrate our anniversary.  I hope to slip out and wet a line while we are there.

July 15, 2007 -  In the dog days of summer it is more important than ever to fish during low light hours of the day, not only to avoid the heat but to take advantage of the best fishing.  We've had some stellar bites at dawn and dusk but the fish tend to shut down under the bright sun.  More specks and puppy drum continue to move into the Middle Peninsula.  September and early October should be the best fishing for them along with great shallow water striper fishing.  The topwater striper bite continues to be good, especially around Fort Wool in Hampton.  We had a fun morning in the Dragon Run catching largemouth on the fly with bass bugs.  It's hard to beat the visual display of a bass blowing up on a popper placed next to a log in a foot of water!

July 3, 2007 -  This morning I was able to take a break from guiding and do a little fishing of my own with my father.  We hit the shallows of the Middle Peninsula and landed about 40 fish in 3 feet of water.  There was a great mixed bag of stripers, specks, croaker and flounder.  It was a blast having nice fish strip line off the reel as they streaked across the flat!

June 25, 2007 -  My friend Jonathan Winks and I made the run offshore near the Chesapeake Light Tower, yesterday.  Jonathan caught his first fly rod cobia on a 9wt.  The 41" fish hit an olive and white hollow fly.  Jonathan is on a roll of late with his first tarpon (during our trip to FL) and cobia in only a month.  As a side note, I have added an article on targeting flounder on the fly to the Articles and Lessons section of the website.

June 24, 2007 -  Summer has greeted us with some good shallow water fishing on the Middle Peninsula.  We've been catching stripers to 30", specks to 21", croaker to 18" and undersized flounder on fly and light tackle.  During the next couple weeks, we should see some excellent fishing.  The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel is still producing lots of stripers on topwater lures in the evening and earlier morning.  Puppy drum and bluefish are hanging out in the area, as well.  There are largemouth bass, bream and perch to be had for those interested in an adventure to the Dragon Run.
