Spring 2008

- Fishing has ranged from fantastic to mediocre from one
day to the next. We've landed stripers to 27" and specks
to 21" on fly and light tackle. From broken leaders to
hook pulls, we have been bested by the biggest fish... however,
that's what keeps us coming back for more! I expect the
average size of speckled trout to decrease as we head into
summer, but puppy drum should become more abundant as the season
progresses. Schoolie striped bass will be available
as well as a few quality ones over 30". Hitting the water
at dawn gives us an opportunity to tackle these rockfish with
surface poppers. Croaker, flounder and bluefish round out
the shallow water variety. Those willing to leave the dock
early are rewarded with cooler temperatures, colorful sunrises
and the best fishing. I hope to see you soon!

- The weather has been hot of late but the fishing in the
shallows has been on fire! Quality specks to 23" and
stripers to 24" have been abundant in 2 to 4 feet of water.
I've been tossing live bunker on the flats to get the fish
aggressive and then we sight cast our fly or lure to surface
explosions as fish chase down the baitfish. This technique
makes for the most thrilling method of fishing Virginia's
shallow water. It is shaping
up to be one of the better years for speckled trout fishing.
There should be nice specks around for the next 4 weeks and then
again as the water cools in early fall. We spent one day
fishing the freshwater of the Dragon Run and had a nice mixed
bag of bass, pickerel, bluegill and yellow perch. I always
enjoy the scenery of the cypress swamp.

- I had outdoor writer, Ric Burnley, with me yesterday.
He's writing an article for Saltwater Sportsman about the
area's shallow water fishery. As luck would have it, I
caught the biggest speckled trout of my life... an 8 pounder!
Needless to stay, we got those magazine photos he needed!

- My reports have been neglected for a few months, but
finally I have a moment to make a post. I will not be
fishing out of Norfolk/VA Beach until Thanksgiving.
Instead I will concentrate all my charters out of the Middle
Peninsula from now through mid-November. Fishing on the
Middle Peninsula during the last few weeks has been difficult
due to what seems like never-ending wind. Stripers are
staging on shallow structure and a few speckled trout are
making a showing. Bluefish in the 16-22" range have been
moving onto a grass flat at dusk to thrash large schools of
silversides. The mayhem has been so explosive at times, it
sounds like a hail storm on the water! The next couple
weeks are a great time to hit the Dragon Run in the early
morning for largemouth bass on poppers. June through
mid-July is excellent for a mixed bag of saltwater species on
fly & light tackle. Come on down for a fun day on the
water!
