Fishing Reports
Summer 2009

September 20, 2009 - I'm excited to announce that I will be adding a Power-Pole to my boat.  For those of you not familiar with a Power-Pole, it is a hydraulic "shallow water anchoring system" that is mounted on the transom of the boat.  It can be raised and lowered with the push of a button on the center console.  It will make holding position in the shallows much easier which equates to more fish for you!

September 12, 2009 - I am a guest speaker at the Fall Striper Event being held at Bass Pro Shops in Hampton on the 19th & 20th.  I will be giving a seminar on striped bass fly fishing at 4PM each day.  Saturday's presentation will focus on wintertime trophies.  On Sunday I will discuss skinny water techniques.  I hope to see you there!

September 10, 2009 - One of the windiest & coolest starts to September that I remember, however it looks like stable weather is finally on the way.  I have openings from the 13th to the 16th.  The fishing is good, so let's get out there and have some fun!

September 6, 2009 -  We battled through a few more gusty days on the water.  After almost a week, the blow finally ended and gave way to beautiful conditions for Labor Day weekend.  Guide wages aren't much, but I sure have an office with a view!

September 2, 2009 -  Wind, wind and more wind!  Blow as it may, it hasn't kept us from chasing fish.  The nice thing about the Middle Peninsula is that there is always a calm place to catch them if you know where to look!

August 28, 2009 -  Wet a line for two hours this morning.  Caught and released my second citation speckled trout in as many outings as well as 10 other beautiful specimens in the 20-23" range.  To round things out, played with some hard fighting stripers and reds.  Shallow water slam - Chesapeake Style!

August 27, 2009 -  We've been tossing flies the last couple days.  Today was a little slower but we still managed to keep the rods bowed up most of the morning.  The cooler weather in the forecast has me thinking of the coming months.  I will continue to be on the Middle Peninsula from September through the first half of November.  The excellent fishing and pleasant temperatures make this a popular time for charters.  I'm getting numerous bookings, so be sure to contact me ASAP to reserve a date!

August 25, 2009 -  I had a chance to slip out and do some fishing for myself.  There are still quite a few quality speckled trout around, but it takes a lot of finesse and knowledge to catch them.  I got a 25.5 incher which brings the total to 7 specks over 25" boated on the summer.  This matches the number of citation trout we landed last year.  I have some open dates over the next week, so let me know if you want to get out there!

August 23, 2009 -  Evie had a good time playing at the ocean.  I don't think that any of us were ready to come home, but I couldn't give these fish too long of a break!  We've been back at it the last few days and picking up where we left off.  Today, we had some excellent action on my Bizurk Bunker fly.  This topwater fly is awesome for enticing stripers and specks into ballistic surface explosions!

August 17, 2009 -  I can't stop humming my daughter's nursery rhymes, so here's a corny one about the great fishing we've been enjoying.  Hum diddy dum... rock, specks and reds are lots of fun!

August 14, 2009 -  The specks and rockfish came out to play in this morning's rain!

August 13, 2009 -  We're still whoppin' up on lots of nice fish.  I'm a little upset to be leaving town... and the fish behind!  I will be leaving Monday and returning Thursday evening.  If you need to reach me urgently, please call my cell at 804-815-4895.  I will answer emails when I get home.

August 11, 2009 -  I just returned from some family time in Roanoke and will be heading to the OBX for a quick jaunt early next week.  Catch & release rock fishing has produced explosive action in the early morning.  We've caught a few nice reds including one with 24 spots.  Another big 25.5" speckled trout was released by my father!

August 7, 2009 -  Fishing has been good the last few days.  Yesterday morning, we had the perfect conditions for August fly fishing - cool, calm and cloudy.  The fish were stacked up in the shallows all morning and at first light they hit topwater crease flies.  My dad caught and released another trophy 27" speck, but unfortunately I don't have a picture (left the camera at home).

August 4, 2009 -  The fish continue to play hard to get.  We've had fish busting on baitfish many times, but getting them to eat a fly or lure has not been easy.  Fishing live peanut bunker on a circle hook is the trick when fish are refusing artificials.  A 26" speckled trout topped the list of best catch!

August 1, 2009 -  Hot weather and strong wind slowed the fishing action at the end of the week.  We seem to be stuck in the same weather pattern everyday due to a stalled Bermuda High.  We're catching fish but having to work much harder for them.  Hopefully, we'll get a change soon to spark the fishing!

July 27, 2009 -  We're still enjoying good rockfishing with a peppering of reds, specks and flounder to keep things interesting.  While the sweltering dog days of summer finally have arrived, we are hitting the water at sunrise to take advantage of cooler temperatures and hungry fish.

July 23, 2009 -  Striped bass fishing has been excellent the last couple days.  These rockfish are fat & happy in the cooler than normal water for this time of year.  We've landed them to 27" in the shallows and lost several larger fish.  I have a few open dates in the next couple weeks, so let me know if you want to slip out for some exciting fishing!

July 18, 2009 -  Two young lady anglers came to fish with me the other day.  They did a terrific job landing 6 different species including some nice stripers, specks & reds.  Way to go girls!

July 14, 2009 -  Yesterday, I had two good friends/clients aboard.  We fished 17 "secret" spots and found fish at every one.  By the end of the morning, they landed close to 50 fish on fly!

July 10, 2009 -  These cool days with low humidity have been a pleasant surprise compared to the sweltering heat that July typically brings.  I've even had to turn on the heat in the truck a few mornings!

July 5, 2009 -  It's been a busy few days of fishing.  One trip produced non-stop shallow water striper action on the fly.  Casting a clouser minnow on a floating line, my angler was hooked up on almost every cast!  The catch of the holiday weekend belongs to my dad who landed a 28" gator of a speckled trout from his kayak!

July 2, 2009 -  Here's a little media news.  In this month’s issue of Fly Fishing in Saltwaters magazine, you will find an article that I wrote titled “Wired for Bunker”.  The article discusses an adult bunker fly pattern that I developed during a sleepless night when my daughter was an infant.  You also will find me in this month’s issue of The Rivah magazine.  The author chronicles a morning of fishing on the Middle Peninsula.  There is a fantastic video on the magazine’s website so be sure to check out the footage!

June 30, 2009 -  One great thing that I love about shallow water fishing in the summer is the variety of species available to fly & light tackle anglers.  Over the last few days, we've caught stripers, reds, specks, flounder, croaker, blues, puffers, white perch and houndfish.  You never know what may be the next fish tugging on the end of your line.  We even caught the same striper with half a tail on two consecutive days!

June 27, 2009 -  The last few days on the water have been very enjoyable.  Some of my anglers have included fisheries biologists, a great young lady angler and the owner of Rose River Farm which is one of VA's premier private trout waters.  My season on the Middle Peninsula started with a terrible streak of loosing a couple dozen big fish to pilings, hook pulls - you name it!  Finally, this week we've been getting a few of those nice fish to the boat.  We've landed specks to 25" and stripers to 30" on fly & light tackle including some explosive topwater popper action at first light!

June 23, 2009 -  It's time for some fun summertime fishing!  We're catching a mixed bag of beautiful speckled trout, striped bass, redfish, flounder and croaker.  The fastest action of late has been on live peanut bunker but a hot fly has been a version of the Stuck Up Minnow with a foam Loco Skin tail.  Yesterday evening, I played "male model" for a Virginia Tourism Commission photo shoot... I think I'll stick with my day job!
