Fishing Reports
Winter 2009

March 7, 2009 -  There will be an article on one of my fly patterns, the Snag-Free Delight,  in the May issue of American Angler magazine.  The fly is tied on a DOA Long Neck worm hook to hide the hook point which helps prevent snagging the fly while fishing structure.  The fly pattern is pictured below.

March 5, 2009 -  I am a featured speaker at two upcoming fishing shows.  On March 14th I will be attending the National Capital Angling Show in Washington, DC.  For more info on the show, see http://ncc-tu.org/ .  On April 18th & 19th, I'm at the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival in Waynesboro, VA.  See http://www.vaflyfishingfestival.org/ for more info.  I will have a booth at these shows, as well.  Be sure to stop by and say hello!

February 28, 2009 -  Old Man Winter just doesn't want to play fair this year!  Every time there is a little warm up, it quickly turns cold again.  I've run a few night trips under the bridge lights and results have been marginal.  If we can ever get sustained warmer weather, the night action should be fast.  Possibly, we'll see a quick spurt of daytime blitzes as the ocean stripers move into the bay to spawn in the next couple weeks.  In the meantime, here are a few more flies.

February 11, 2009 -  This warm weather has been a long awaited welcome.  We've been catching stripers to 30" around the CBBT.  With the water temperature rising, some larger fish will be moving into the area.  On Saturday, I will be at TieFest in the Kent Island Yatch Club, MD.  I'll be tying a few flies and hanging outside with a fly rod in my hand.  I hope to see you there!  Below are a few Wired Bunker tied with synthetics in place of the saddle hackle used in the original version of the fly.

January 24, 2009 -  Yesterday was my first charter since the freezing temperatures of the week prior.  The good news is that the stripers are still stacked up at the CBBT.  The fish were packed in tight schools up to 25 feet deep of solid fish!  I still expect lots of great fishing from now through late February with trophy striped bass always a possibility this time of year.  I've added tying directions for the Wired Bunker and a few new fly pictures to the Fly Tying section.

January 15, 2009 -  Prior to this Artic blast of wicked cold, we had some great fishing - day & night.  Hopefully the temperatures will rebound quickly so we can get back out there after them!

January 4, 2009 -  I would like to congratulate Japanese angler, Teramoto, who is currently living in NYC.  He caught a 48" monster on fly while fishing with me last night.  Today's charter had non-stop daytime action with approximately 150 stripers.

January 1, 2009 -  Happy New Year!  I've added some pictures to the Fly Tying section of my website of a bunker pattern that I have been working on.  By tying individual portions of the fly onto bent pieces of wire, I am able to create a pattern that maintains the high profile of an adult menhaden without excess material.

December 28, 2008 -  'Tis the season for CBBT striper madness!  Literally, thousand upon thousand of striped bass have moved into the lower bay with the arrival of winter.  Most days we have landed over 100 fish to 36".  I expect January to bring more of the same but with an increased number of trophy fish in the mix.  Bring on the New Year!
