Materials

 

Hook:  Sz 4 – 1 standard shank (Mustad S71S SS or equivalent)

Thread:  Clear mono (UTC monofil .006 or equivalent)

Weedguard:  20# mono

Weight:  lead dumbbell eyes

Eyes:  Burnt mono

Mouth:  Craft Fur

Feelers:  Midge Flash

Walking Legs:  Neck Hackle

Swimming Legs:  Neck Hackle

Claws:  Neck Hackle

Carapace:  Craft Fur

 

 

Tying Instructions
 

  1. Attach lead dumbbell at the hook eye.
  2. At the hook bend, tie in several strands of midge flash for feelers.
  3. Tie in a clump of orange craft for “mouth” and trim closely to hook bend.
  4. Tie in mono eyes extending to the rear of the hook.
  5. Create the walking legs by palmering a neck hackle
  6. Tie in two short heck hackles to create the claws
  7. Work toward the hook eye, by adding clumps of craft fur and palmering neck hackle
  8. Once the hook eye is reached, trim the neck hackle to create swimming legs and trim the craft fur to create the carapace of the mantis shrimp
  9. Tie in a two prong weedguard at the hook eye.
